My Changecamp would be one that would primarily focus on teens and the media, and the potential harms it has on a young teen. I would go to as many high schools and elementary schools as possible to convey my message to a large audience of teens and kids, and educate them now so they don't have to learn the hard way. I would set up a day camp at the school, bascially having workshops in class, outlining what the purpose is of the camp and what the goal is by the end of the day. The camp would be called "NO-Strings-Attached" because literally all you need is yourself in this camp nothing else; well clothes would be great. Also, the Camp name suggests the common misunderstanding of the media, because really, nothing is truly No-Strings-Attached, there's always some sort of twist and myth in each advertisement. Cellphones, Ipods, Handheld games and any other sort of electronics that re-direct focus to the person to the "Virtual World." All devices will be confiscated at the beginning and returned back at the end of the day. In order for the kids to be engaged in this sort of topic, many activities done both indoors and outdoors. With these activites, everyone will be expected to participate, making sure no one is left behind.
Many times we can get mislead in the media about the difference between what is socially acceptable and what is not. Through advertisements in the media, we are easily lead by semiotics that something is the norm and what is the "in" thing. The goal is to focus on these topics, and by getting a full participation from everyone. Our focus group would be youth primarily because they are the future and change is what we need, so educating them would be most beneficial. Without any access to the outside world, many will feel withdrawl, but its through activities and games that one will realize that theres more to life than just engaging yourself into the Virtual World. Sometimes its just a matter of using ones common sense, seems like people have lost their sense of common sense, because now everything we do is basically done at convience and ease. We will teach the youth about ethics and social norms and how we can stop the stereotypes made through the media. The one question that will be asked will be asked at the beginning of the Camp, "Name the 5 things that you value the most and why." We will discuss this throughout the day and see how people's 5 values in life change by the end.
